About Bearing

Bearing is an outdoor equipment company built on one idea: complexity is the enemy of performance.

I spent fifteen years building a backcountry gear company, and before that a career in computer security. Both taught me the same lesson. The systems that fail are the ones with too many parts, too many features, and too many things that can go wrong a long way from help. So at Bearing we start with fundamentals and take things away until only what works is left.

We don’t niche down. A lot of gear is built for one activity, one season, or one kind of trip, which means buying another version for the next one. Bearing gear is general purpose by design. A pack light enough for a fast overnight that still carries a heavy load when the trip calls for it. A shelter that does several jobs instead of one. We call this capability density: how much real capability you get for every ounce, seam, and moving part.

It’s better for you, because you own less and trust it more. It’s better for the places we all go to use it, because the greenest gear is the gear you never have to replace.

Our name comes from the compass. Everything we make is meant to help you find your direction and keep it, in the country that matters to you.

I’m building Bearing from the road, moving between Colorado, New Mexico, and Alaska, with a dog riding shotgun (an incredibly cool dog named Iris). Everything we make gets tested in real country, in real weather, by people who care about it. We’d rather make something that never fails you than promise to replace it when it does.

Welcome to Bearing.
